Need to get motivated Ask your boss what their salary is
Need to get motivated Ask your boss what their salary isNeed to get motivated Ask your boss what their salary isHow much money do you make? Its a question that has long been considered bold, or controversial, if not outright rude. Discussing salary - even among close friends and relatives - is a common social taboo. Money, and what you earn, is often lumped together with religion and politics as impolite or too contentious for public conversation. In the workplace, its even riskier territory. Many companies discourage employees from sharing paycheck figures or even explicitly require that benefits arrangements remain top secret. Even when there arent written policies in the books, its rare that colleague rate of pay makes it to lunchroom discussion. Why?The silence around income is not from lack of interest. A recent study, co-written by Zo B. Cullen, an assistant professor at Harvard Business School, and Ricardo Perez-Truglia, an assistant professor at UCLAs Anderson School of Manage ment, found that employees are so curious, they would sacrifice days or even weeks of their own hard-earned green for a peek into what peers and managers earn. They hunger to knowAm I earning as much as I possibly can for my position? Is my compensation fair? The only true answer comes from cold, hard numbers. Pay transparency - revealing the salary of all employees within an organization - is often touted as the one clear solution. If all employees know what everyone else is making, any bias or discrimination will become obvious, and organizations will be pressured to even things out. Everyone wins right?Traditionally, career experts say this knowledge can do more harm than good - demoralizing employees, fomenting distrust between coworkers, and hurting your chances for a future raise.New data, collected by Cullen and Perez Truglia, shows its not quite that simple. They conducted a field experiment among 2,060 employees at a large, multi-billion dollar consumer bank, gathering inf ormation from administrative records, surveys, and performance figures. The research confirmed knowing your coworkers salary has a real impact on employee productivity and happiness, just not in the way everyone conventionally assumed.Assumptions about pay structure are inaccurateThey found, there are widespread misconceptions about coworker salaries. When guessing, on average, what coworkers and managers earned, people were off about 28% of the time. Meaning, less than a third of employees could guess within 5% of their associates salaries. And that can be a problem for productivity, depending on how their guesses skew.Learning a coworker earns more decreases performanceWhen employees think their peers - with the saatkorn responsibilities, rank, and title - make even 1% more than they expected, it has a negative effect on all aspects of performance. They worked fewer hours, sent fewer emails, and hit lower sale margins.Their overall satisfaction with salary, position, and responsib ilities suffered. The likelihood of seeking re-assignment within the company, or looking for a new job soared. And, they dont seem to share the salary information they learned with their friends at the office water cooler to contribute to all-around transparency.Learning a manager earns more makes employees work harderKnowing the salary of a superior - the boss - also has a significant effect on performance, but in the opposite direction.Even a perceived increase of only 1% in manager salary makes subordinates work harder, and longer hours. They send more emails. Sales figures go up. Retention improves. This boost to motivation persists for 90 to 180 days after finding out.The effect is strongest for employees close to their managers position - read a promotion or two away - but it persists for salaries of management even higher up the corporate ladder. The bottom line Salary perceptions impact employee behaviorStaff only seem to care about unequal pay in relation to one specific group their peers.Women tolerated even a gendered pay gap, as long as the male earning more held a different position. Meaning, a title or responsibilities difference makes people think differently about earnings comparisons. While different salaries for the same title felt unfair, it was easier for employees to justify even large pay gaps between subordinate and supervisor. A higher managerial salary makes it seem like prosperity is just a little hard work away.JaniceRodden is a Manhattan-based writer and editor with experience creating digital features and multimedia content. 5 Ways to Survive and Thrive Under a New Boss
5 Ways to Survive and Thrive Under a New Boss 5 Ways to Survive and Thrive Under a New Boss When a new boss comes in, you might feel somemixed emotions bitterness, excitement, apprehension, and anticipation are all common. However, it is duringsuch times of change that you need to draw on all your emotional intelligence to avoid negativity and stay focusedon your professional goals and successes. The reality is that, when a new boss arrives, there are winners and there are losers. Previous favorites often lose some esteemwhileoverlooked team members get the chance to step out of the shadows and shine. You cant take the status quo for granted when a new boss arrives, so here are a fewtips to helpyou be one of the winners1. AskQuestionsIn your first one-on-one meeting with your boss, you want to get a good understanding of their values and expectations byasking the following questions- What do youexpect from me over the next 3-6 months?- How often do you like to be updated with progres sion?- Doyouprefer written reports or face-to-face updates?- How often will wemeet?- Whats the best way to approachyouwith questions?- How much power do I have to make decisions in your absence?By asking these questions andcarefully listening to your new bosssresponses, you will get a strong idea ofyour bosss values. You can then use this information to make sure your performance and behaviors always align with your bosss wants and needs.2. Observe Your Bosss ApproachIn an ideal world, youd have a meeting with your new boss on their first day at the job. Inreality, it might take a few days, a week, or even longer to get thatface time.Even so,your bosswill no doubt expect you to read their mind and treat them theway they expect to be treated. This is not as hard to do as it may sound. By observing your new boss in action, youll be able to get an idea of what makes them tick. So, keep a close eye on your boss and keep observing them, even after youve had yourone-on-one meeting.3. BeR eady to Let Go of the Old and Embrace the NewThe new boss is probably going to make a few changes. You may like some of them, but others may cause you some distress. Theres nothing wrong with raising some subtle and constructive criticisms of your bosss new approach, but once its set in stone, its your job to forget the old days and fall in line.4. Become a Valuable AdvisorOnce you have established a reasonable rapport with your boss, you can take further steps to get yourselfnoticed. For example, you could act as a kind of buddy or tour guide. Your new boss is also doing some adjusting of their own. If you can help them get a handle on the companys culture and processes, theyll definitely appreciate it.5.Score a Quick WinIf you can register a quick win with your boss early on,you will be more likely tomakea strong and long-lasting positive impression on them.Scoring that quick win is easier said than done, of course, but its still achievable. Find out what your bosss pain points ar e, and then develop and propose a solution that could make immediate improvements in the area.Thriving under a new boss is largely about fitting in. You have to accept that change has come, let go of the past, and adapt your attitude and approach to fit the new regime. There is little time for resistance. Adaptability is key if you want to be a winner in your new bosss eyes.

ANTHROPOMETRIC MEASUREMENTS In order to lower attrition rates and provide better quality applicants for Officer Candidate School and follow on training pipelines, CNRC is working closely with aviation community representatives in all areas. One particular area of concern is the anthropometrics measurements of pilots and naval flight officers. A strict process is used in Pensacola to measure applicants in order to determine which air frames they may qualify to fly. These measurements are based on several factors including height, weight, functional reach, buttocks knee length, and sitting height which is used to ensure the aviators safety on sitting in the cockpit as well as eme rgency ejections. These measurements include everything we have measured previously with the exception of buttock leg length. After studying the data the aviation community has come up with more accurate guidelines to apply for measurement ranges. The following are the accepted guidelines that should ensure compatibility with all pipelines. For applicants who may be close to limits, I have access to the anthropometricswebsite to enter data directly to check measurements. For qualified applicants who are possible selects who are close to limits, ?we may also explore the option of sending them to Pensacola to check their measurements first hand. FOR MALE SNA 1. Thumb-tip Reach FR 29.5 inches or greater2. Buttock Knee Length greater than 22 inches, but less than 26.5 inches3. Sitting Height greater than 34 inches, but less than 38.8 inches FOR FEMALE SNA 1. Sitting Height 32 inches or greater The following guidelines give directions as far as height concerns. Generally an applicant between 66 and 74 will be compatible for all pipelines. FOR SNA 1. IF 64 INCHES OR GREATER, BUT LESS THAN 76 INCHES - MOST LIKELY ANTHROPOMETRICALLY COMPATIBLE WITH AT LEAST TWO PIPELINES (SOMETIMES THREE) 2. IF GREATER THAN 76 INCHES, BUT LESS THAN 78 INCHES - MOST LIKELY ANTHROPOMETRICALLY COMPATIBLE WITH ONLY ONE PIPELINE (NORMALLY PROPS), BUT POSSIBLY TWO PIPELINES (DEPENDS ON SITTING HT). 3. IF LESS THAN 64 INCHES tresor ANTHROPOMETRICS COMPATIBILITY WITH ANY PIPELINE IS HIGHLY UNLIKELY INDIVIDUAL IN QUESTION SHOULD BE SENT TO NOMI FOR OFFICIAL ANTHROPOMETRIC MEASUREMENT AND EVALUATION BY NASC FLIGHT PHYSIOLOGIST FOR SNFO 1. IF BETWEEN 64 INCHES AND 78 INCHES - MOST LIKELY ANTHROPOM ETRICALLY COMPATIBLE WITH TWO PIPELINES (PROP JET), BUT POSSIBLE AIRCRAFT RESTRICTIONS SUCH AS THE EA-6B FOR INDIVIDUALS WITH SITTING HEIGHTS GREATER THAN 37.4 INCHES. 2. IF BETWEEN 60 INCHES AND 64 INCHES MOST LIKELY ANTHROPOMETRICALLY COMPATIBLE WITH TWO PIPELINES (PROP JET), BUT POSSIBLE AIRCRAFT RESTRICTIONS SUCH AS THE T-2, F/A-18, AND EA-6B FOR INDIVIDUALS WITH FUNCTIONAL REACHES LESS THAN 27.5 INCHES (T-REX ARMS). Finally, weight limits prohibit any training for applicants over 235 lbs. This is due to the safety concerns of ejection seats. No candidate will be allowed to enter training who is over 235 lbs. People dislike these new ads that glorify workaholicsPeople dislike these new ads that glorify workaholicsAn ad campaign by freelance services company Fiverrthis week wanted to give a shoutout to the doers - the people who work tirelessly to make things happen. You know the type You eat a coffee for lunch. You follow through on your follow through. Sleep deprivation is your drug of choice. You might be a doer.Thats what one advertisement in parteicular, which pictures a young woman with messy hair, said, which went viral after someone tweeted a photo of it in a subway, according to website attnBut instead of winning over adherents, the ad campaign was derided for glorifying the culture of workaholism - a message no one wants to hear any more in the most overworked country in the world.Fiverrs edgy advertising styleProvocative advertising is an established part of the companys brand.A video adon theFiverrwebsite begins with a little girl approaching a woman with a drawing. The woman p ushes the drawing out of the girls hand as her doe-eyed look turns into a frown.Afemale narratorsays , Got an idea? Isnt that cute. My little sister has ideas. You? You have a business to build.Later on in the ad, the female narrator says, Cancel the brainstorm. The only one who can do this is you, as a woman slices a whiteboard with a chainsaw.Using words like cute and a machine with sharp edges to get the companys message could be perceived as an edgy strategy. The name of the campaign, which also appears on the ad with the young woman, is In Doers We Trust. It raised the hackles of many workers who have already been told for too long to work constantly and let everything else in their lives drop. Even if necessary for some to survive financially, its not pleasant - and made some question why the company is celebrating this lifestyle. The company commented on the campaignFiverr is a marketplace for talented freelancers and bootstrapping entrepreneurs who pursue their dreams and pass ions, value flexibility, rapid experimentation, and doing more with less. ur In Doers We Trust campaign targets customers, those entrepreneurs who are starting a business from scratch and recognize the kind of work ethic it takes to bring an idea to life, Fiverr told Ladders. But the company seems to have triggered dissatisfaction with a larger issue the difficulty of making a living on gigs alone, and how it wears down workers - particularly young ones. The gig economyTrying to survive on freelance work can be difficult, particularly for young people who are part of the gig economy. Task work requires a heavy workload, pays less than full-time work, and does not come with healthcare. Gig workers also frequently have to deal with difficult taxes at the end of the year.Lets get one thing straight the gig economy isnt making anyone rich. The pay for gig work is low, and people from lower-income backgrounds are more likely to rely on getting gigs to pay the bills.Americans who live in h ouseholds making$30,000 or less every year are more than twice as likely to engage in technology-enabled gig work, compared with those living in households earning $75,000 per year or more, according to a2016 report by the Pew Research Center. And the burden is disproportionate for younger workers In the last year, fully 12% of 18- to 29-year-olds have earned money doing online tasks, but that share falls to 4% for Americans ages 30 to 49 and just 1% among those 50 and older, according to a2016 report by the Pew Research Center.Nor is the gig economy limited to the United States.A 2016 McKinsey Report found that up to 162 1000000 people in Europe and the United States- or 20 to 30 percent of the working-age population- engage in some form of independent work. With so many people relying on this part-time labor as a form of income, lets just say some felt it was too soon to make light of the exhaustion it causes. What other people are sayingSo Fiverrs In Doers We Trust campaign was enou gh to get some peoples blood boiling.A freelancerspoke up about why he thinksthe companys message didnt apply to him.Another bentzer played up the sarcasmWherever you stand onFiverrs In Doers We Trust campaign, one thing is certain people have had different experiences hustling in the freelance world, but being frazzled is far from something they wear as a badge of honor.

Learn About Being a Navy Physician Assistant
Learn About Being a Navy Physician AssistantLearn About Being a Navy Physician AssistantPhysician Assistants (PA) are trained at the graduate level and able to expand the reach of the Navys healthcare team in assessing and treating patients. That level of skill and education earns military PAs a place in the commissioned ranks right alongside doctors, nurses, and other graduate-level professionals. In the Navy, PAs are expected to provide the same worldwide service as any other military professional, though in addition to postings at land-based hospitals they may serve aboard aircraft carriers and other ships, caring for sailors and Marines. Direct Commission of Civilian PAs Whenever the Navy has openings, civilian physician assistants can skip Go and collect an officers commission. None of the Navys requirements for the job are more important than valid licensure, but PAs must also be medically- and physically-fit U.S. citizens between the ages of 18 and 41. Obviously, licensed civilians entering the Navy already have most of the education they need to do the job, but that doesnt make them naval officers. The Direct Commission Officer Indoctrination Course at Newport, Rhode Island, despite being comprehensive and intense, is only two weeks long. Somehow in those two weeks, new Navy PAs learn enough about military leadership, customs, and naval history to earn their first salute. They will, however, sweat through drill and physical training under experienced Marine Corps Drill Instructors. Civilian Scholarships In addition to HPLRP, the Navy offers two programs to help future PAs finish their schooling The Health Professions Scholarship Program and the Health Services Collegiate Program. While their names and benefits are nearly identical, there are two basic differences If youre going to rack up a tuition higher than $134,600 - the cap for the Collegiate Program - then the Scholarship Program holds the advantage with 100% tuition reimbursement.Though both programs offer a monthly stipend (similar to thePost-9/11 GI Bills monthly housing allowance) the Collegiate Programs $3,280 to $5,610 per month towers over the Scholarship Programs $2,122. Sailors and Marines Interservice Physician Assistant Program (IPAP) The Navy sets its own requirements for IPAP in chapter 6 of OPNAVINST 1420.1B(MS Word). Sailors and Marines must be at least an E-5 (petty officer 2nd class or sergeant, respectively) and younger than 42 years. The program is only for active duty servicemembers, but reservists may apply if theyre in the Full Time Service or Active Reserve programs. In some ways (if you already intended on a military career) IPAP is a nifty shortcut around some of the long schooling required to become a PA. No bachelors degree? No schwierigkeit Entry only requires a high school diploma and 60 undergraduate credits. Thats a feasible goal for off-duty education, though 30 credits in core subjects like chemistry and anatomy must be taken in residence. Sailors of any rating (or Marines with any military occupational specialty) can apply for IPAP, but the regulation adds that hospital corpsmen who finished advanced schooling to become independent duty corpsmen gain an edge by wiping out the additional 30 semester hours and the 6 AP anatomy and physiology semester hours. Navy students in IPAP train alongside future PAs from the other service branches at Fort Sam Houston, Texas, where they spend the first phase of the program earning a bachelors degree. The remainder of the program takes them through clinical experience and a masters thesis at naval hospitals aboard either Camp Pendleton or Naval Base San Diego.

How to wake up, engage, and create the job of your dreams
How to wake up, engage, and create the job of yur dreamsHow to wake up, engage, and create the job of yur dreamsAre you getting the kind of results you want at work? If youre like many professionals, the answer is no. Perhaps youre stalled mid-way up the career ladder and youre not sure why. Or maybe youre just feeling vaguely unfulfilled. You may assume the harte nuss is your boss, or your companys culture, or even the industry youre in. But before you change jobs - or worse, resign yourself to a mediocre work life - ask yourself Am I really giving 100%?Many people get deckenfries in a cycle of sleepwalking through the workday and we dont even realize it. We tend to look for some outside cause for our feelings of restlessness when the truth is we arent fully engaged. What we really need to do is ask ourselves What do I want my job to be like? And how can I create it?Most of us work the same way we live. And sadly, very few of us really consider what kind of life we truly want, let alone take steps to make it a reality. Were living a life that was chosen for us, or one that we made by default, or one that we accepted out of fear that we couldnt do any better. As a result, were unfulfilled, burned out, and unhappy. It doesnt have to be this way. We all have the potential to lead an extraordinary life. That includes an extraordinary work life. The vast majority of us could, if we so chose, perform at a much higher level. We could reinvent our job to be more fulfilling. So why dont we? Its because most people see the world through filters and rigid belief systems weve developed over time. Were filled with fear, confusion, judgment, and a sense of separateness that makes life, and work, feel purposeless. This blocks our ability to innovate, problem solve, and connect with other people in an authentic way.The key is to become more conscious. When we do, we can transform every area of life. My book, Uncovering the Life of Your Dreams, conveys this message in the form of allegorical fiction. It follows protagonist Scott Billings as he moves from sleepwalking through life to awakening to a new reality that yields unprecedented career success, stronger and richer relationships, and a newfound desire to serve others. The reader follows Scott through the uncovery process Removing all that is mind-fabricated until only purity remains. During his journey he passes through five portals - Awareness, Acceptance, Knowing, Presence, and Freedom. Based on the insights gained through these portals, here are four steps to wake up to the work life of your dreams.1. Get self-aware. What thoughts and beliefs are shaping the way you perceive your job?We all have experiences and expectations that shape our perception of the world. We make up stories and interpret our environment based on how things seem to us in the moment, not stopping to consider how these perceptions match up to reality. We are too close and personally invested in the situations and circumstanc es of our lives to perceive them accurately. We need to strip away ego-generated thoughts and beliefs that keep us from seeing things as they are. Only then can we make intentional adjustments.Ask yourself Am I overthinking why things happen in the workplace? Am I assigning motives to people that they dont really have? Am I making assumptions based on things that may have happened at a previous job? In short, understand that you bring your own perceptions to the workplace, and they might influence how you feel and even how you act in certain situations. To improve self-awareness, imagine watching your life as though it were a movie. Try to detach yourself from the outcomes and just take in the show. Focus on the things that happen without trying to contextualize or interpret them. One degree of emotional separation will open your eyes to the problems we create for ourselves just out of a lack of awareness. Dont let these sap your energy. Be very intentional about taking a step back an d realizing whats real and whats a product of your mind.2. Stop judging. departure accepting. Many of us spend far too much precious time and energy judging the world around us. We get personally attached to what we view as the right outcome or the right way to handle a situation, so we fight what is. We are also quick to make character judgments about other people when they do things we dont agree with. This non-acceptance causes most of our emotional suffering. We get stuck in a judgmental mode of thinking and as a result, come to view the world - and the workplace - as painful, unjust, and disappointing.Have you ever felt really sure that things should happen a certain way, only to later find out you didnt know the variables? Most of us have experienced this. We get all bent out of shape and take things personally. We are really invested in being right when in the end it doesnt really matter.Even when a coworker does something youre sure is a mistake, its better not to judge. In reality, we are all trying to feel panzerschrank we are all seeking love. True acceptance is understanding this and knowing that most of the time, the mistakes we judge other people for making are born out of ignorance. We need to get to a place where we can accept all possible outcomes and make peace with how things happen. When we embrace acceptance as a part of who we are, we release any emotional connection to a particular outcome. The idea is to accept and embrace all experiences that life provides, not judging them as bad - or good. Mastering acceptance allows you to experience life open-armed and with a sense of joy. One way to start to cultivate acceptance is to keep a judgment journal so that you can become aware of all the judgments you make on a daily basis.3. Stop shutting down your intuition.Intuition is a powerful force that can point us in the right direction. Its knowing something without knowing how you know it. Intuition comes in many forms. Some people have bodil y sensations that inform them - literally, a feeling in their gut. Some people hear a voice inside some people see images. We need to first recognize our intuitive experiences and language then we need to listen to our intuition and let it shape our actions. In the workplace, where decisions tend to be more evidence-based, we tend not to speak up about our intuitive feelings. This is especially true when our intuition is telling us to change course, or when it points to a problem in something we believe in. Were afraid of appearing ignorant or vulnerable, and most of us fear the unknown, so we push forward despite our instincts telling us to readjust. But, when we have a strong gut feeling we should at least mention it.Get fear out of the equation and tap into your inner wisdom. We need to practice listening to our intuition from a place of acceptance and awareness. Keep an open mind. Dont look to your intuition for confirmation of what you believe or want to be true, but instead be open to hearing whatever your intuition has to say. Remember Intuition can help you only if you dont have any emotional attachment to a particular outcome or result.4. Master the art of presence. Many of us tend to stay so focused on the past and future that we dont really engage in the present moment. Yet the only time we have the power to really effect change in our lives is in the present. Worrying about the past, future, or anything other than the present moment splits your focus and saps your productivity. In your work relationships, being present helps you actively listen to and engage with the people around you. Being present for whatever you do enables you to perform to the best of your abilities.Do you ever find yourself going to a meeting and kind of zoning out? Youre present physically but youre not fully engaged and participating. Were all guilty of this kind of thing from time to time. Its not always easy to be fully in the moment, but thats how you bring value to your job. One solution is to begin a meditation or centering practice. Even a few minutes in the morning will increase your ability to focus and be present for the rest of the day. There are many meditation apps and free videos to get you started. The secret to a fulfilling life is to accumulate a lifetime of fulfilling moments. It takes effort and intentional thinking to be present for these moments and to not let them pass you by. And yes, that includes being fully engaged in the time you spend at work. Not only does this make you a top performer, its the source of the joy and fulfillment you want to derive from your work life. When you master these four steps, you are finally free to really wake up and start living the life of your dreams. That includes reinventing how you approach your work. These skills free you to stop going through the motions and get fully engaged in your work. When you do, you may be surprised by how differently you perceive your job. And youll finally be able to s hape and nurture a professional life you can be proud of - one that brings you true joy and fulfillment.

3 Reasons Youd Need to Use a Functional Resume
3 Reasons Youd Need to Use a Functional Resume3 Reasons Youd Need to Use a Functional ResumeNo luck on the job front? You might want to rethink your resume format. While traditional resumes are generally a safe route, a functional resume could highlight your strengths more effectively, depending on where you are in your career.Unlike traditional resumes, functional resumes allow you to group your work history by skills rather than in chronological order. For instance, check out this excerpt from a sample resume via the Peirce Colleges career guideRelevant Skills Sales and New Account Development Increased a small publications advertising revenue through market research and promotionDeveloped new distribution outlets for a special-interest magazine in Northern CaliforniaCustomer RelationsServed as vendor representative for Jana ImportsCoordinated product information and distribution for 75 field representatives and major accounts.fruchtwein job descriptions do not call for one format or the other and it is difficult to ascertain what the reviewers preference may be, says Uva Coles, dean of career management services at Peirce College. Instead of spending time trying to decide what will work best for the reviewer, try to decide which format will tell your story in the most compelling and relevant way.Spend your energy ensuring your resume reflects alignment between the skills required for the role and the skills you have gained over time, she says.1. You are in a career transition. Making a huge career move into a new industry means that its more important for you to highlight your relevant, transferable skills than the chronology of your work history. In fact, Coles says that a functional resume is ideal if youre in a career transition.2. You have employment gaps. A functional resume is a great way to zero in on relevant achievements, which can help deflect some questionable gaps in your work history. In a nutshell, if you want an employer to focus on the what ( i.e. what you can bring to the table) vs. the when and where (when you last did this work or where it was done), functional may be the way to go, Coles says.3. You have little experience. If you lack enough work history to even fill out a traditional resume, then a functional style would be best suited for you. For instance, recent grads who are new to the work force would be better off grouping the skills they garnered from relevant volunteer experience, internships, and other extracurricular activities.Whatever you do, select the format that demonstrates direct alignment and relevance to the job. After all, its the content, not the look, that matters most, Coles says.Ritika Trikha is a writer for CareerBliss, an erreichbar career community dedicated to helping people find happiness in the workplace.
